Science Breakthroughs — World’s Best Dinosaur Fossil (2017) Known as a Nodosaur, this 110 million-year-old, armored plant-eater is an exquisitely preserved fossil—and surprisingly statuesque. It was discovered by a miner in 2011 and publicly unveiled on May 12, 2017. This is an extraordinary new discovery of a dinosaur fossil so pristine and complete, that it shows off the texture, patterns, and color of a prehistoric giant. Discover this brand new species that roamed during the late Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. The Royal Tyrrell Museum in Alberta has spent five years and over 7,000 hours preparing the fossil for research and display. 🔔 SUBSCRIBE: https://www.youtube.com/c/HouseformApologetics?sub_confirmation=1 ⍝ SUPPORT @ https://paypal.me/houseform https://patreon.com/houseformapologetics

Wouldn’t it be cool to be able to point at a fossil and know that it’s the first, say, plant? Well... yeah! But it's not that easy! Scientists are always making new discoveries that throw all our old assumptions into question, but we've put together a list of the oldest fossils of their kind that we know of so far! National Geographic Documentary - Fossils Of Dinosaurs - Natural secrets Dinosaurs are a diverse group of reptiles of the clade Dinosauria. They first appeared during the Triassic period, between 243 and 231 million years ago, although the exact origin and timing of the evolution of dinosaurs is the subject of active research. They became the dominant terrestrial vertebrates after the Triassic–Jurassic extinction event 201 million years ago; their dominance continued through the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods. The fossil record indicates that birds are modern feathered dinosaurs, having evolved from earlier theropods during the late Jurassic Period. As such, birds were the only dinosaur lineage to survive the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event 66 million years ago. Dinosaurs can therefore be divided into avian dinosaurs, or birds; and non-avian dinosaurs, which are all dinosaurs other than birds. This article deals primarily with non-avian dinosaurs. Dinosaurs are a varied group of animals from taxonomic, morphological and ecological standpoints. Birds, at over 10,000 living species, are the most diverse group of vertebrates besides perciform fish. Using fossil evidence, paleontologists have identified over 500 distinct genera and more than 1,000 different species of non-avian dinosaurs. Dinosaurs are represented on every continent by both extant species (birds) and fossil remains. Through the first half of the 20th century, before birds were recognized to be dinosaurs, most of the scientific community believed dinosaurs to have been sluggish and cold-blooded. Most research conducted since the 1970s, however, has indicated that all dinosaurs were active animals with elevated metabolisms and numerous adaptations for social interaction. Some were herbivorous, others carnivorous. Evidence suggests that egg-laying and nest-building are additional traits shared by all dinosaurs, avian and non-avian alike. While dinosaurs were ancestrally bipedal, many extinct groups included quadrupedal species, and some were able to shift between these stances. Elaborate display structures such as horns or crests are common to all dinosaur groups, and some extinct groups developed skeletal modifications such as bony armor and spines. While the dinosaurs' modern-day surviving avian lineage (birds) are generally small due to the constraints of flight, many prehistoric dinosaurs (non-avian and avian) were large-bodied—the largest sauropod dinosaurs are estimated to have reached lengths of 39.7 meters (130 feet) and heights of 18 meters (59 feet) and were the largest land animals of all time. Still, the idea that non-avian dinosaurs were uniformly gigantic is a misconception based in part on preservation bias, as large, sturdy bones are more likely to last until they are fossilized. Many dinosaurs were quite small: Xixianykus, for example, was only about 50 cm (20 in) long.

Two sets of dinosaur fossils from the Jurassic period have been discovered in southwest China's Yunnan Province. They are believed to date back more than 180 million years ago.
Catch And Cook: 450 Million Year Old Living Fossil - Horseshoe Crab The original plan was to do some Blue Crabbing. This would give me a break from fishing and I would also be able to clear out some fish carcasses from my freezer so I could get some ice cream. Unfortunately, the Blue Crabs were nowhere to be found. Fortunately, a cooperative Horseshoe Crab cruised by and volunteered to be in my video. Horseshoe crab fossils have been found in strata dating back 450 million years ago. The only place that I have seen these eaten were in South East Asia. One of the common recipes seen at the markets was a Horseshoe Crab salad (Yam kai meng da). They basically roast the Horseshoe Crab, dig out the roe and fat and mix with Thai Mango salad. This is all put back into the shell of the crab. Bon Appetit. From the rare deep sea goblin shark, to the tiny hula painted frog, here are 10 Living Fossils ! Fig Wasps -- Here’s an insect that suffered from a case of mistaken identity. In the 1920s, a fig wasp fossil dated 34 million years old was found, but incorrectly catalogued as an ant. When the fossil was re-analyzed in 2010 The Nautilus -- No, we’re not talking about Captain Nemo’s ship, or exercise equipment. This Nautilus is a marine mollusk that has basically stayed the same for the past half-billion years, give or take. These creatures first appeared during the late Cambrian period and later became a group of sea predators. They’re the last remaining cephalopods with a bony body structure that externalizes as a shell… unlike octopus and squid, their distant relatives. The nautilus is actually closer to cephalopods that first appeared 500 million years ago than the more modern creatures that showed up some 100 million years later The Hoatzin (hwat-seen) -- These birds engender some debate because their evolutionary tree seems to be missing a few branches … so to speak. About the size of a pheasant, they usually have a total length of 26 inches and are usually found in swamps and mangroves of South America’s Amazon and Orinoco Delta. Debate about the animal stems in part from certain characteristics that aren’t found in other birds … the chicks of the Hoatzin have claws at the ends of their wings, which helps them to climb up and cling to trees. Because the creature is so distinct, it’s actually been given its own family. Genetic research conducted in 2015 revealed the Hoatzin to be the sole surviving member of birds that flew off in their own direction some 64 million years ago. So we’ll admit it up front … this picture is photoshopped. The lady in the green pants has been seen in the same pose in that same exhibit with different animals digitally inserted in the display window. That said, it seems to be an alligator snapping turtle the lady is looking at. Maybe she’s fascinated by being face to face with a living fossil. With their beaklike jaws, spiked shells and thick scaled tails, they still look like prehistoric creatures … and are often referred to as ‘the dinosaurs of the turtle world.’ This reptile is one of the heaviest freshwater turtles on the planet, weighing around 176 lbs on average with a carapace, or shell length of 31 inches. The biggest-ever alligator snapping turtle was supposedly found in Kansas and weighed 403 lbs, but the claim was never verified. They’re one of North America’s largest freshwater turtles, with life spans up to 100 years! Given these animals have only one natural predator, the century-mark might be attainable. But that one predator is us. Humans capture these animals for their meat and shells … that has led to alligator snapping turtles being listed as a threatened species. Goblin Shark -- No wonder they put a good, old-fashioned scare into people … Goblin Sharks are ancient deep sea creatures, the last remaining member of of a family around 125 million years feetold. It’s easily identified by its pink skin, long, flat snout, and its powerful jaws, which can essentially pop out of its mouth and tear into their prey with its razor sharp teeth. The whole process looks like something from one of those “Alien” movies. They stay shrouded in mystery, since they prefer ice cold waters at depths up to 4300 feet. Think you’d like to run into one? Crocodilia (krok-a-dee-lee-ah) -- This is an order of mostly large, semiaquatic predatory reptiles that date back almost 84 million years ago to the late Cretaceous Period. As you might expect, this order includes crocodiles, alligators and various caiman (kay-man) families. The animals in this order are usually solidly built with elongated flattened snouts with ears, eyes and nostrils found at the tops of their heads. Other common characteristics include thick skin covered in scales, peg-like teeth and a powerful bite, and they’re largely carnivorous. Crocodilians can range in size from the smallest species, Cuvier’s Dwarf Caiman which grows under 5 feet long … to the largest species, the fearsome Saltwater Crocodile … which can measure up to 23 feet and weigh up to 2600 lbs. Of all living reptiles, this animal is the biggest. This apex predator is the most widely distributed of any modern croc, found from eastern India to southeast Asia to northern Australia. They’re considered the most dangerous living crocodilians to humans … and with the strongest bite force ever recorded, it’s no wonder why! These are the 12 most amazing archaeological findings and discoveries from a new human species to a fossilized gar skull. Subscribe to Talltanic http://goo.gl/wgfvrr 6. Romeo and Juliet A pair of turkey sized egg snatching lizards were found lying next to each other for 75 million years, fossilized in rock. The pair of dinosaurs were given the nickname romeo and juliet by paleontologists who came across the discover in Mongolia. One of the skeletons is complete while the other one is missing a few pieces. Determining the gender of the two is the next challenge but they firmly believe that these creatures resembled modern day peacocks like you see in this illustration. The team theorised that if it were to be male it would have most likely used it feathers to attract mates and not flying. The females didn’t really need this characteristic and their skeletons would be more fitted for laying eggs. With clues like these paleontologists put the pieces together and determined there was one male and one female found in this fossil. 5. Prognathodon Skeleton Paleontologists were able to come across the discovery of a remarkable Prognathodon in Central Jordan in 2013. This horrific 85 million year old creature stretched over 50 feet long, making it like the T-Rex of the seas. Prognathodons were apex predators and anything that swam near its mouth was as good as gone. It’s believed that these reptiles breathed air but was an extremely efficient swimmer. Here in this photo, you see the perfect outlining of its tail and flippers which made it king of the seas. It was able to thrive in the shallow waters during the late Cretaceous period. It almost resembled a vicious whale with razor sharp teeth. 4. Tropical Gar Skull Here in this photo we see a fossilized Gar from fossil lake, Wyoming and are among some of the most primitive fish. They’re easily identifiable with their long, snouts and diamond shaped scales. This skull here was taken from a Tropical Gar which shares very similar characteristics to prehistoric creatures you see in the fossil. Even though this creature was once widespread across the globe, they’re now only found in North and Central America as well as Cuba. 3. Australian Cooyoo Fossil A 100 million year old fossil was discovered in the outback of Queensland and it’s soo well preserved, you can actually make out it’s eye socket! It almost looks like some type of ancient piranha with it’s sharp razor sharp teeth but much larger. This type of prehistoric fish, was known as the cooyoo and this crazy fossil proves that their teeth were much longer than previously thought. The teeth can grow up to 2-3 centimeters long and it’s not something you’d want to get your finger caught on. These fossils give a remarkable insight on what life on Australia would have been like during the Cretaceous Period. 2. Oldest Sign of Life Many people are wondering exactly when life on planet earth began. Scientists uncovered the oldest signs of life in South Western Greenland in the Isua Greenstone Belt. Thanks to melting snow here, people were able to uncover 3.8 billion year old stromatolite fossils, recently in August 2016. These are by far the oldest fossils of organisms outdating other fossils by several hundred years. This suggests that life began on Earth at this time. Scientists used what’s known as U-Pb Zircon dating in order to come up with a plausible time period. Stromatolites are layered structures that form in shallow water from mud that was bound together by microorganisms. These fossils also had chemical signatures that were formed in the rock that prove the existence of life. These are now rarely found across the world and some believe, these are also on Mars as well. 1. Towering Herbivore The massive dinosaur called the Austro Poseidon magnificus towers over any other dinosaur at the time and it’s fossils were announced to the public in October 2016 by paleontologists. This dinosaur measured a massive 82 feet from tip to tail and at least 25 feet tall. This species of dinosaur is believed to belong to the Titanosaur group of herbivores, who were characterized by their long necks, large bodies and fairly small skulls. Their tall necks would allow them to feast on the leaves of towering trees. Here in this photo you see the massive vertebrae which would be about the size of your head. It’s currently being held at the Rio de Janeiro Museum of Earth science.
Here are 10 extraordinary fossils that have been found preserved in amber. Amber certainly makes beautiful jewelry, but its clarity and longevity have also proven it to be a great preservation medium. Here are 10 extraordinary fossils that have been found in the solidified resin. Number 10. Ancient hierarchical civilizations. Thanks to some well-preserved remains, researchers now believe arthropod social structures have been around longer than anyone ever imagined. The encased specimens of ants and termites recently studied date back roughly 100 million years. Number 9. A possible early version of the bubonic plague. The disease is well known as a Middle Ages mass killer, and its power may have been building since before the dawn of man. Traces of very similar bacteria were found on a 20-million-year-old flea trapped in amber. Number 8. First carnivorous plant. Dating back some 40 million years, the specimen, which has gooey, insect-trapping tentacles shooting off of its leaves, still contains traces of its last meal. The fossil was found in what is now Russia. Number 7. 52-million-year-old parasitic beetle. The creature’s prey of choice was ants, and it was somehow able to dupe the hard workers into letting it live in their nest. While there, the beetle would likely eat the ants’ young and exploit their resources. Number 6. Elusive male stinging scorpion. There are many holes in the history and development of the Miocene scorpion, as very few remains of the ancient ones have been found. Except for this one, a very rare, fully-grown male discovered in Mexico. Number 5. A daddy long legs with an erect penis. With a 400-million-year history of existence, that the arachnids mate isn’t surprising. However this particular one, estimated to be about 99 million, is the oldest known to have been preserved in such a state. Number 4. A flower on the verge of being fertilized. Had it not been for the flow of resin that engulfed this bud 100 million or so years ago, the bloom likely would have spread viable seed far and wide. Instead, it was fossilized right as pollen tubes were about to make contact with flower’s stigma. Number 3. A spider on the brink of an attack. This roughly 110-million-year-old, 8-legged predator missed out on getting a last meal by a sliver of time. The would-be nibble was a wasp that had become ensnared in the web. Number 2. Dinosaur feathers. Many experts have suggested the prehistoric beasts were covered in them, and this particular piece of amber certainly lends support to the idea. It was discovered in Canada and created some 78 million years ago. Number 1. Ancient Caribbean lizards. Even though they are 20 million years old, the reptiles inside the golden stones were not found to differ from their contemporary counterparts in any significant way. Scientists attribute the rarity to stable ecological surroundings. Which amber-encased fossil do you find most fascinating?

A 99-million-year-old baby snake fossil was found preserved in amber—the first of its kind. The fossil is about 2 inches in length, and has 97 preserved vertebrae. It's the first baby snake fossil ever discovered, and the first snake found in amber. Researchers also believe they found a piece of skin from an adult snake in a separate piece. ➡ Subscribe: http://bit.ly/NatGeoSubscribe About National Geographic: National Geographic is the world's premium destination for science, exploration, and adventure. From the million year old Mexican Beetle, to the crazy dinosaur eggs found recently, these are 12 BEST Preserved Fossils ! An Egg-strordinary Find --In southeast China, workers laying new sewage pipe were surprised to discover a clutch of fossilized dinosaur eggs at their worksite. 43 eggs were discovered, 19 of which were completely intact. Rocks on the Lochs -- If you’re feeling old, check out this rock … it contains well-preserved fossils of life forms thought to have lived over a billion years ago. That’s billion with a ‘B’. These fossil-bearing rocks were found on the edge of a remote Scottish loch in 2011 … and it’s thought the life forms once lived at the bottom of lakes a billion years ago. While considered primitive, these organisms had specialized cell structures including a nucleus and could reproduce sexually, helping to speed up evolution. Scientists believe that land plants and green algae ultimately evolved from these organisms. Scorpion Fossil -- An amazing fossil discovery, said to have been found by a farmer in a dirt pit dug by hand. This 2 centimeter male scorpion was unearthed in the amber-rich Chiapas Highlands of Mexico. Fossilized scorpions are rare, let alone complete ones. Taking a close look at these pictures by Francisco Riquelme revealed the entire body of the scorpion perfectly preserved in amber. From one angle, its tail seems poised to strike, like the animal could suddenly spring to life and burst out of its ancient tomb. The detail and clear features are really amazing. The specimen is tentatively dated between 15 to 23 million years old, and is considered a new species. Did you know more than 258 scorpion species have been found in Mexico? Fossilized eggs the size of a button are said to contain the remains of the world’s oldest lizard embryos. Discovered in Thailand in 2015, scientists were able to peer inside the eggs by using synchrotron x-ray scanning … and it appeared the embryos were ready to hatch at the time of their death. Researchers had expected to find remains of a primitive bird species, or perhaps a small dinosaur inside the eggs … finding the ancient lizards was unexpected. About the size of sparrows eggs, they are hard-shelled, which is considered unusual for lizards. Dated at 125 million years old, the eggs belonged to a lizard related to the Komodo Dragon, which lived during the Cretaceous period. The ancient lizard species has yet to be named. In 2015, outback Queensland was the site of a huge haul of fish fossils that dated back 100 million years. But one fish fossil in particular stood out … details in the fossil were so clearing defined, you can even make out its eye socket! No wonder it caught many people's eyes. That fish was a Cooyoo and measured nearly 10 feet long with teeth around an inch long. It also had a powerful tail, and researchers think it probably targeted larger fish. While scientists were jubilant about the find, the Cooyoo doesn’t seem all that happy. Then again, if you were fossilized for 100 million years, maybe you wouldn’t feel like whooping it up either! Even if you don’t like insects, you might feel for this creature trapped in Burmese amber ages ago. This is a female scale insect from the Mesozoic period, and she’s carrying 60 eggs on her back in an effort to protect her offspring. In Bo Wang’s photo, you can see the eggs and freshly hatched nymphs encased in a wax coated egg sac located on the insect’s abdomen. This is actually the earliest evidence of insect brood care that dates to at least 100 million years ago. It’s a way of protecting their young from inclement conditions as well as from natural enemies. This amber fossil is very unique since fossilized examples of such animal behavior are exceedingly rare. Alberta Canada’s Dinosaur Provincial Park is known to have one of the world’s richest deposits of dinosaur fossils in the world. In 2010, paleontologist Philip Currie discovered what might have been the find of his career. It was a baby Chasmosaurus (kaz-moe-sore-us) belli … the first intact fossil of its kind, with a near-complete skeleton …only the creature’s arms are missing, thought to have been eroded away thousands of years ago by a sinkhole. You can see the incredible detail in Clive Coy’s picture. The skull in particular is notably intact, as is the vertebrae. The horned, plant-eating Chasmosaurus was a relative of the Triceratops, and grew to around 16 feet long. Currie’s discovery measures around 1.5m long and died 72 million years ago, thought to have been about three years old. Because larger animals usually ate or destroyed smaller dinosaurs, it’s likely the Chasmosaurus was preserved away from predators in a river bed after drowning. Fossils are the stone remains of animals or plants that were once alive. Fossils can be the bones of a dead dinosaur or his big footprints in the sand. Usually only the skeletons of animals are left after millions of years. But sometimes a whole animal, like a woolly mammoth, gets trapped in ice. In video from a town hall event in Glenside, PA on Wednesday, state Senator Scott Wagner took a question from a woman later identified as a volunteer with Sunrise Movement, a climate change advocacy group. The woman said her name was Rose, age 18, and asked if Wagner’s citing “body heat” from humans as a source of climate change—he told a reporter last March that “We have more people. You know, humans have warm bodies. So is heat coming off?”—has anything to do “with the 200,000 that you have taken from the fossil fuel industry?”---

Many times paleontologists will never know exactly how old a fossil is. Usually they guess its range or span of time. A good way of guessing the range is to look at the layers of rock that were formed by volcanoes. It's easier to guess the age of volcanic rock because it's brand new rock from the moment that it is spit onto the earth's surface.
